Verification of moist surface variables over northern Australia in a high-resolution reanalysis (BARRA)

Reanalyses are important tools for understanding past weather and climate variability, but detailed verification of near surface humidity variables have not been published. This is particularly concerning in tropical regions where humid conditions impact meteorology human activities. In this study, we used screen level temperature data from a high-resolution atmospheric regional reanalysis, the Bureau Meteorology Atmospheric Regional Reanalysis Australia (BARRA), validated against automatic stations (AWS) 32 sites across northern Australia. Overall, BARRA was reliable, with time series AWS being very highly correlated, there were some seasonal diurnally varying biases. The variability differences also changed location to as function day season, much less than ‘weather signal’ evidenced by high correlations. particular, amplitude diurnal cycle overestimated, dry (winter) season. general, larger those dew point temperature, wet bulb had least uncertainty. study contributes better effectiveness reanalyses examining moist on variability.
